OCTOBER/NOVEMBER AT VERGE GALLERY :: THE DREAMS OUR STUFF IS MADE OF
OCTOBER 22- NOVEMBER 14, 2015
THE DREAMS OUR STUFF IS MADE OF ::
The Dreams our Stuff is Made of is an investigation of the profound influence of science fiction upon the language and thinking of contemporary art. The very notion of ‘the contemporary’, being largely a construct of an institutional and curatorial context eager to prove its own worth in a world increasingly hostile towards the arts, borrows freely from concepts that have been explored, at length, in science fiction. Alternative histories, worlds and universes are no longer the subject of literary and cinematic fancy. The metaphysics of our universe are increasingly up for grabs.
Artists have been asked to respond visually to a science fiction text (or texts) which has influenced their artistic practice. Books, comics, film and animation has all been referenced in a complex sprawl of images and references. Prepare for a trip through time, space, and the human capacity for thought.
Artists include Ron Adams, Kate Beckingham, Drew Bickford, Eric Bridgeman, Nathan Corum, Lucas Davidson, Jo Diball, Chris Dolman, Marya Elimelakh, Leah Emery, Christian Flynn, Jodi Franco, Hayley Megan French, Andrew Frost, Nicole Gillard, Miles Hall, Biljana Jancic, Matthias Kryger, 長澤トマソン (Thomasson Longmarsh), Elsa McGrath, Jonathan McBurnie, Ron McBurnie, Anna McMahon, Robert Mercer, Paul Mumme, Adam Norton, Lena Obergfell, Naomi Oliver, Glen O’Malley, Sue O’Malley, Jamie Preisz, Christopher Raymond, Anna Madeline, Kate Scardifield and Luke Strevens
