Double Vision and Liquid Architecture are very excited to present internationally acclaimed musician Islaja for her debut performance in Sydney. She will be joined by special guests; Love Chants, Ela Stiles and Jasmine Guffond.

Islaja –
Islaja is Merja Kokkonen, is a visual artist and musician living and working in Berlin, Germany. Her debut album Meritie (Fonal, 2004) gained praise in international music media such as The Wire, Dusted Magazine and WFMU. Islaja records her music at home using a rainbow of instruments to accompany her personal vocal delivery sang in Finnish. She has been compared to Björk, Syd Barrett, and Nico.

Love Chants –
Love Chants “is two guitars, a drum kit and a spectral voice, dispensing the peripheral concerns of beauty and reaching for its simplest elements.” Members of the band are Anthony Guerra (Black Petal), Michael Zulicki (Mad Nanna, Alberts Basement) and Matt Earle (Breakdance the Dawn).

Ela Stiles –
Ela Stiles is a Sydney based a solo musician and founding member of bands Songs, Bushwalking, The Roamin’ Catholics and The Rangoons. Her debut album released in 2014, a strictly a cappella recording was described as “an exploration of voice as instrument and texture, abstracted through the repetitive whir of drone….. Undulating like a raga, one moment guttural and folksy, the next high-pitched and soaring.” Stiles recent live performances delve further into extended vocal abstractions using loops, dark synth drones and textures as well as vocal chanting and spoken word.

Jasmine Guffond –
Jasmine Guffond is a sound artist and composer from Sydney, Australia, living and working in Berlin, Germany. Her music draws upon influences from experimental electronic, song, techno and avant-garde, working with abstract sound as much as traditional musical forms, aiming to create a concordant relationship between a sound that holds emotive power and musicality and a sensitive microscopic study of electro acoustic phenomena.

Double Vision –
Double Vision is a series of free-form gigs held at Verge Gallery showcasing the practice of DIY, experimental, sound artists and musicians. The program seeks to a create platform that encourages collaboration between artists and musicians – and their communities, providing the opportunity to reframe and recalibrate creative vision through a cross disciplinary approach.

Liquid Architecture –
Liquid Architecture is an Australian organisation for artists working with sound. LA investigates the sounds themselves, but also the ideas communicated about, and the meaning of, sound.
