+ Saturday August 4, 1-3pm
Join writer and curator Kathleen Linn in a series of reading group gatherings.
Over the last two sessions of Creative Reading Group we have read ‘Curatorial Activism’ by Maura Reilly. The final section of Reilly’s book is called ‘Talking Back’, she borrows this from academic and theorist bell hooks. For Session 3 we will be reading two articles by bell hooks, they are:
+ Chapter 5 ‘On self-recovery’ from Talking Back: Thinking Feminist, Thinking Black 1989
+ ‘Expertease – bell hooks on Cultural Interrogation’ from Artforum Issue 27 1989
Please RSVP to the Evenbrite link for PDFs of the readings. We will read the articles together in the session but feel free to read them beforehand and come with ideas to discuss.
The first session on Saturday 26 May formed an introduction and begun a conversation around socially engaged art practices and what this can do politically and for community building. The reading assigned was the first chapter of the recently released book Curatorial Activism by Maura Reilly. Participants were welcome to read the first chapter beforehand, but there was time to read and discuss it together over the session.
In the second session on Saturday 23 June the group continued to read Maura Reilly’s book Curatorial Activism. They read the next chapter together and discussed the chapter during the session.
