TEXT VERSION

The design of these costumes are identical, except for the colour of the bodysuits; one is a metallic bluey-purple and the other is a velvet moss green. Both bodysuits cover the performer from head to toe, except for an exposed arm. The other arm has fabric, in the same colour as the rest of the bodysuit, draped down to the ankle.

The performer stands and walks on bucket stilts which consist of a bucket turned upside-down. In order to move, the performer uses a rope to assist in lifting the bucket up.

Each bucket has coloured plush tubular rope winding around the circumference. The performer wearing the bluey-purple costume has one bucket that matches the colour of the costume and another that is pearly-white in colour.

The performer wearing the moss green costume also has one bucket that matches the colour of the costume, while the other is a mottled brown and white in colour, with pieces of straw sprouting outwards at various points.

On one knee of each costume is a knee pad, about 30cm in length and extending 3cm out. They have been made from the same tubular brown and white rope that is wrapped around the bucket of the moss-green costume. In this instance, the rope has been twisted around into a circular spiral decoration, forming the structure of the knee pad, mimicking the idea of a snail.

On each costume, there is one cut-out which exposes a breast of each performer. A white starfish covers the nipple of the performer in the bluey-purple costume and a velvet fluorescent peachy-orange starfish covers the nipple of the performer in the moss green costume.

Almost identical to the BREATH SHINE costume, a crystal-like formation, iridescent in colour, and somewhat see-through, covers the head in a peak and flares out and downwards, until it reaches the waist of the performer. The texture looks creased, like a scrunched-up piece of paper. A variety of colours reflect off the headpiece as it moves around in different lights.

Each performer wears large goggles in the same material as the bodysuit. The lenses of the goggles are round and completely black, resembling big googly eyes.

Reflecting on this set of costumes, HOSSEI shares, “Working on ESSSENSSSE I knew I wanted to go down a very camp route and look at some of the most fun outfits that ever hit the cat walk…lil Kim’s 1999 MTV VMA outfit in particular has always stayed with me, it was so forward thinking and felt very powerful. The twins come out in iridescent crystal heads, but when taken off, revealing their looks, referencing LIL Kim, these two remind me of Ursula’s eels, bodyguards, kinda like fashion girlies.”
