TEXT VERSION
This costume is a fluorescent peachy-orange colour and is made from velvet. It covers the performer like a baggy, oversized onesie. Each hand and foot are completely encased, allowing them to make a flapping motion.
As the costume is not fitted and hangs loose, when the performer extends their arms out to the side and their legs are wide apart, the costume resembles a large starfish.
On the back, where the buttocks would be, are two orange spirals, placed on each cheek. These spirals are made in the same material as the rest of the costume.
On top of the performer’s head is a helmet made from the same peachy-orange velvet fabric. Attached to the helmet is a balaclava which hangs over the face, with only the eyes and nose of the performer showing. Two oversized antennae sprout up and then arch outward from the top of the helmet. They dangle down to the waist on each side, with the end of each antenna attached to a flat disc-like sand dollar that sways with the performer’s movement. Attached to each sand dollar is an even smaller disc with a silver structure hanging off it. This structure looks, and sounds, like a wind chime.
The performer wears large blacked-out goggles which are also made in the same material and colour as the bodysuit.
HOSSEI shares that there were various sources of inspiration for this costume. He says, “This outfit felt so perfect; growing up watching Care Bears in the nineties and Teletubbies in my teenagerhood, then later Macca Pacca in my adulthood, it felt right to create my version of this kind of energy. The stars play such an important role in the show…STAR POWER is a starfish at its core and has this magical power to create joy around them.
