TEXT VERSION

This costume entitled WORMHOLE is 1 of 5 in this exhibition. This creature is a dark and vibrant purple with the body appearing to be accordion-like so that the performer can bend and move.

This tall, narrow, cylindrical, worm-like costume stands approximately 2 metres high, tall enough that the performer inside needs to extend their arms above their head to support the shape of the structure.

On top of the costume is a tubular vine that can retract or extend as well as rotate around.

From top to bottom are purple horizontal strips of fabric which gives the structure a frilled look and movement. Five evenly spaced horizontal hoops are positioned within the costume, giving the appearance of segments.

Attached to the vibrant purple body of the wormhole costume are brightly coloured sea creatures. Towards the middle is a round tan-coloured sand dollar, 30cm in size. Lines extend out from the centre of the sand dollar, giving it a pleated effect.

There are four randomly placed starfish, ranging in size from 20cm up to 40cm with the two smallest starfish made of a hot pink material. One of these starfish is placed towards the top and the second is placed towards the middle of the costume. The mid-sized starfish is a vibrant blue, located at the top. The largest starfish is at the bottom of the costume. It is shiny with a pink and purple sheen depending on how the light reflects off it.

The basic structure of all five WORMHOLES is a similar dark purple cylindrical shape however the placement and colours of the starfish and sand dollars slightly vary between each WORMHOLE costume.

In designing this exuberant costume, HOSSEI was inspired by the idea of a sea cucumber.
